Writers Anonymous hit another home run when they and the Council of the Arts sponsored the Spring Poetry Contest at Pell City High School and Duran South Junior High School during April, which is National Poetry Month. The topic students were to write about was “Identity.” Students were encouraged to think about who or what has made them who they are and then to write a poem about it.
As well as awarding cash prizes, Writers Anonymous paid for all six winners and one sponsor/chaperon from each of the schools to go to the joint meeting of the Georgia Poetry Society and the Alabama State Poetry Society on Saturday, April 20th. While there, students participated in a poetry workshop, enjoyed lunch and got to hear United States Poet Laureate, Ms. Natasha Trethewey speak.
In addition, all the winners’ poems are on display at the Pell City Library. The panel of three judges had some difficulty choosing the winners because, as one judge put it, “all the poems were winners.”
Official winners for the contest from Duran South Jr. High School and Pell City High School
are listed below. The winning poems of these student-poets are on display at the Pell City Library.
It’s only been one year since Rita Moritz founded the Writers Anonymous group, but it’s been an extremely busy year. Besides their monthly meetings, they have sponsored a well-attended "Night of Poetry" at the library, hosted a creativity workshop, and sponsored this poetry contest at the schools. And, says Moritz, “we’re just getting started!
Of course, all these things cost money. So Writers Anonymous has planned a fund-raiser. We hosted an
Arts and Crafts Show at the Civic Center on May 11, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All money from table rental as well as donated items that will sell on the Writers Anonymous table went to fund future creativity workshops, poetry contests, and other activities.

Writers Anonymous meets on the first Thursday of every month at the Pell City Recreation Hall, which is located at 311 19th Street from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
